Warden's correspondence, 1873-1914.

Correspondence received and sent by the wardens of the Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun. Included are letters to and from county, state, and federal government officials, businesses, and the general public. Although the majority concerns routine operations of the prison, particularly the purchasing of supplies and the management of the prison's furniture and twine operations, some letters concern the behavior and treatment of individual prisoners and escaped prisoners, and overall institutional management.

The Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun was opened in July 1851. It was under the jurisdiction of the State Board of Supervisors (WIHV87-A1267) in 1881, then the State Board of Control (WIHV85-A2106) in 1891. Until the opening of the Women's Prison at Taycheedah (see WIHV88-A50) in 1933, it served as a maximum security facility for both men and women and since then for men only.
